Common Questions About Cabinet Painting Projects
Below are some of the most common questions customers ask us when having their cabinets restored by our team.
Do you paint the cabinets at my home?
CertaPro can paint cabinets at your home per request. We would simply have to setup a spray station in an empty garage as long as temperatures are warm enough to paint. Typically, we transport cabinet doors and drawer facings to our office warehouse for preparation & spray application. The framing components of the cabinets are prepared and painted in the kitchen.
How long does a cabinet painting project typically take to complete?
Duration times can vary greatly, depending on the number of cabinets or size of the project. On average, this will require 5-7 business days to complete. This is due to the work required to prepare the cabinets for the primer coat, applying finish coats, and allowing adequate drying time in between each coat.
Can I use my kitchen directly after the painting is complete?
You may use cabinets gingerly, within a day or two of completion. The top coat generally takes two to three weeks for a full cure, so heavy usage and cleaning should be postponed during that time.
Do I need to be present while the crew is painting?
While painting cabinets, our crew will be working portions of the day on site and portions of the day at our warehouse with the doors and drawer facings. Our crew assigned to the job, will communicate with you daily to let you know what days and times we will be on site so you can plan accordingly. Once on site work is complete, we will no longer require access to the inside. If you’re comfortable leaving a key for us to access your home, our Job Site Supervisor will lock up when finished, and our Service Manager will continue visiting your home throughout the project to ensure cleanliness and quality.
What type of paint does CertaPro use, and why?
We prefer to use oil based primers and a water-based urethane enamel top-coat for our cabinet projects. While longer cure times are needed, when you invest in painting cabinets, you want something that will last. Latex paints will begin to peel due to water and heat exposure, rub bare from the oils of hands, and ultimately require more maintenance. Oil and urethane enamel products cure stronger and will provide a better finish and durability. We use Sherwin Williams Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel. Sheen is determined by individual customer’s preference, but we typically apply a satin, semi-gloss, or gloss finish. The higher the sheen usually allows for better washability for cleaning.
How will I need to prepare prior to the painters arrival?
All we require is that you empty out your cabinets and drawers of glasses, pots and pans etc. We do not paint the interiors of the cabinets or drawers, unless requested, which requires additional costs and is unnecessary. However, due to some sanding involved, prevention of dust getting on various items is mitigated by removing items from the cabinets.
How do I choose the right color?
We recommend visiting any Sherwin Williams paint store and looking at colors. It is helpful to narrow down some color choices and then pickup a few paint samples to apply to the cabinets prior to the project starting. Paint colors may look different when viewed on the color swatch versus the actual surface. Putting an actual sample up will also help see how the color looks in different types of light throughout the day. We ask that colors be submitted to our office prior to the project starting so that we are prepared prior to the project start. If you are still unsure on which color to choose, we can help set up a free virtual color consultation with Sherwin Williams. Ask you sales representative for more details!
